What It Is

Outdoor Learning Without Leaving School

In-school programs use your campus grounds, sports fields, surrounding streets, or nearby green spaces as the learning environment. No permits, no overnight logistics, no extended absence from school — just well-designed programming delivered by experienced outdoor educators.

Programs range from a single half-day to a full week of on-campus programming, and can be designed as a standalone experience or as a foundation before a larger multi-day trip.

Who It's For

Schools at Any Stage of the Journey

In-school programs work well for younger students being introduced to outdoor education for the first time, for schools that want to build a foundation before a bigger trip, and for schools that need structured outdoor programming but cannot commit to extended travel.

They also work well as a way to introduce the Karst Climber approach to a school before investing in a full program. We find that schools that start here often come back for more.

Program Formats

Half Day, Full Day, or Overnight

In-school programs come in three formats. Each can be tailored to the age group, the available space, and the school's objectives.

½

Half Day

2 to 3 hours · Morning or Afternoon

A focused block of outdoor activity programming — ideal for introducing a new concept, running a teambuilding session, or giving a class group a structured outdoor experience within a normal school day.

Works well as a one-off or as a recurring weekly session within a term program.

Group SizeOne class to full year group
SpaceSports field, outdoor courtyard, or similar
Best ForTeambuilding, introductory activities, Try-level students
Full

Full Day

5 to 6 hours · All Day

A complete day of structured outdoor programming with multiple activity rotations. Students move through different challenges across the day — building on what they learned in each session as they go.

The full-day format allows for progression within the day itself, with activities sequenced to increase in challenge and complexity.

Group SizeOne year group or multiple classes
SpaceCampus grounds and immediate surroundings
Best ForFoundation building, curriculum-linked programming
Night

Overnight

Dusk to dawn · On Campus

A camping experience on school grounds — the simplest possible introduction to sleeping outdoors. Students set up camp, cook, navigate the campus at night, and manage themselves in a self-sufficient way without ever leaving the school.

For many students, this is their first night in a sleeping bag. That matters more than it sounds.

SpaceGrassed campus area suitable for tents
Best ForPre-trip preparation, first outdoor experience
What We Run

Activities That Work in Any Space

Every activity is designed to run safely and effectively within a school campus. No specialist facilities required.

🤝

Team Challenges

Group problem-solving tasks that require communication, planning, and trust. Students work through a sequence of challenges that gradually increase in complexity — built around the specific dynamics of the group.

All formats · All ages
🧭

Navigation & Orienteering

Map reading, compass work, and orienteering courses designed around the school campus. Students learn to read and move through space with purpose — a foundational skill for every outdoor program that follows.

Full day · Overnight · Ages 10+

Camp Craft

Tent pitching, campfire safety, cooking on a camp stove, knot tying, and basic field skills. Practical and immediately useful — and for most students, completely new. The foundation of every multi-day program we run.

Overnight · Ages 10+
🪢

Low Ropes & Initiative Courses

Ground-level ropes elements and physical initiative tasks that build trust, communication, and collective problem-solving. No specialist structures required — we bring portable equipment and set up wherever space allows.

Half day · Full day · All ages
🌿

Environmental Awareness

Structured observation activities that teach students to notice and engage with the natural environment around them — even in an urban campus setting. Soil, plants, insects, weather, and urban ecology are all usable starting points.

Half day · Full day · All ages
🧗

Indoor Rock Climbing

An introduction to climbing on an indoor wall — movement, technique, trust, and the experience of getting off the ground under your own power. One of the most effective activities for building individual confidence within a group setting. Subject to location and facility availability.

Full day · Ages 10+ · Subject to availability
🌙

Night Activities

Campus navigation in the dark, night sky observation, and sensory awareness activities that change completely when the sun goes down. Night activities are one of the most memorable parts of any overnight program — and require no specialist equipment.

Overnight · Ages 10+
🎯

Leadership Challenges

Structured tasks where students rotate through leadership roles — planning, directing, and reviewing as they go. Designed for older students ready to take responsibility for the group's performance rather than just participating in it.

Full day · Ages 14+
🔍

Expedition Planning

An introduction to planning a multi-day outdoor journey — route selection, equipment lists, nutrition planning, and risk consideration. Used as preparation for a forthcoming trip, or as a standalone exercise in strategic thinking and group decision-making.

Full day · Ages 13+
How It Works

We Do the Planning. You Provide the Space.

01

Tell Us What You Need

We start by understanding your school — the age group, how many students, what space is available, and what you are trying to achieve. Whether it is a first taste of outdoor learning, a teambuilding day before a bigger trip, or a recurring term program, the design starts with your objectives.

02

We Design the Program

Based on what you tell us, we put together a full-day or half-day program — sequenced activities, timings, space requirements, and equipment list. You review it, adjust what needs adjusting, and we only proceed when the school is satisfied.

03

We Come to You

Our educators arrive at your school with everything needed to run the program. We set up, brief the students, and run the day. Accompanying teachers remain present throughout — we handle the programming, they stay connected to their group.

04

Debrief and Next Steps

Every program ends with a structured debrief — for students and for the school. We tell you what we observed about the group, what worked well, and what a logical next step would look like. Many schools use an in-school program as the starting point for a longer outdoor education journey.

What Karst Climber Brings

Everything the Program Needs

👥

Experienced Educators

Our staff have run school programs across China for over two decades. They know how to work with school groups, manage energy levels, and keep students challenged without losing them.

🎒

All Equipment

We bring everything the program requires — ropes, tents, navigation equipment, camp stoves, first aid kits, and any activity-specific gear. Schools do not need to provide or source anything.

📋

Risk Assessments

Full written risk assessments for all activities, tailored to your campus environment. These are provided to the school in advance of the program.

🔄

Debrief Framework

A structured end-of-program debrief for students plus a post-program guide for teachers — connecting what happened in the field to classroom learning and next steps.

📐

Program Design

A fully sequenced program built around your school's objectives, available space, and student age group — not a generic template pulled from a catalogue.

🏕️

Setup and Pack-Down

We arrive early, set up all equipment before students arrive, and pack everything down at the end of the day. The school's grounds are left exactly as we found them.
